Prosperity

Prosperity Life Limited, the first black owned insurance company licensed in South Africa by the Financial Services Board, was founded in 1951 by a group of Transkei business people. Their vision and purpose was to provide in the need of black people for insurance, thereby creating capital for business development and community upliftment. Initially Prosperity was operating throughout the Republic of South Africa, with the head office based in Mthatha, but when the Transkei was granted independence in 1976, Prosperity was considered a foreign country and prohibited from operating in the RSA. From September 1997 Prosperity was relicensed to trade throughout the RSA. In 2004, Assupol Life obtained a 50% shareholding in the company, which was increased to 80% in 2006. The company is undoubtedly the leader in the provision of funeral insurance to the lower end of the market.
